Once the fugitive financier Low Taek Jho is arrested, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) can only verify the extent of the theft involving 1MDB funds.
MACC CEO Latheefa Koya said that when asked to verify the comments of the Attorney General Tan Sri Tommy Thomas, Low or Jho Low stole more than $ 10 billion (RM41.8 billion) in money from state-owned investment companies, making it almost impossible to recover return.
That number claims to exceed the $ 4.5 billion previously reportedly misappropriated from 1MDB.
"You have to ask him," Latheefa said, referring the question to AG.
"The numbers can only be verified with Jho Low. Currently, we can only make estimates based on overall losses."
Low is thought to be the mastermind behind the 1MDB scandal, which has led to criminal charges against former prime minister Datuk Ratak.
The Malaysian businessman is believed to be hiding in China, where he continues to do business in Hong Kong.
